Steareth-6 is a polyethylene glycol ether of stearyl alcohol.[1] The number 6 at the end of the name indicates the average number of added ethylene oxide units. It changes the balance between water-loving and fat-loving portions, resulting in differences in cleansing ability, emulsifying ability, and feel. In cosmetics, it is used to create emulsions in which water and oil are evenly mixed, and to lower surface tension so ingredients can wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
