Sodium C16-20 Alkyl Sulfate is the sodium salt of the sulfate of a mixture of synthetic alcohols with C16-20 alkyl chains.[1] In cosmetics, it is used to help sebum and impurities rinse away with water, create emulsions in which water and oil are evenly mixed, and form foam during use.[2] It is also used to reduce surface tension so ingredients wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
