Polysorbate 85 consists mainly of monoesters and is a mixture of oleate esters of sorbitan and sorbitol condensed with approximately 5 moles of ethylene oxide.[1] In cosmetics, it is used to create emulsion formulas in which water and oil are evenly mixed, and to lower surface tension so that ingredients wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
