About Polysorbate 40

Polysorbate 40 consists mainly of monoesters and is a mixture of sorbitan and sorbitol palmitate esters condensed with approximately 20 moles of ethylene oxide.[1] In cosmetics, it is used to create emulsified formulations in which water and oil are evenly mixed and to lower surface tension so ingredients wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
