About Polyquaternium-86
Polyquaternium-86 is a polymerized quaternary ammonium salt of vinylpyrrolidone, 1-methyl-3-vinylimidazolinium chloride, vinylimidazole, and methacrylic acid.[1] The number 86 after Polyquaternium is only an identifying number that distinguishes different Polyquaterniums; it does not indicate the content or molecular size. Its positively charged portions are used to reduce static in hair and leave a thin film. In cosmetics, it is used to reduce hair tangling and rough feel, hold hair in the desired shape so it does not become disheveled, and adjust the viscosity and flow of the formula.[2]
