About Polyquaternium-83
Polyquaternium-83 is a surfactant that acts at the interface between water and oil.[1] The number 83 after Polyquaternium is only an identification number distinguishing different Polyquaterniums; it does not indicate the content or molecular size. Its positively charged groups are used to reduce static in the hair and leave a thin film. In cosmetics, it is used to help keep emulsions of water and oil from separating easily, add taste and scent to lip or oral-care products, and control the viscosity and flow of formulations.[1]
