Polyquaternium-81 is a surfactant that acts at the interface between water and oil.[1] The number 81 after Polyquaternium is only an identification number distinguishing different polyquaterniums; it does not indicate the concentration or molecular size. Its positively charged portions are used to reduce static electricity in hair and leave a thin film. In cosmetics, it is used to help sebum and impurities rinse away with water, create emulsions in which water and oil are evenly mixed, and reduce tangling and rough feel to leave hair smooth and manageable.[1]
