About Polyquaternium-48
Polyquaternium-48 is a quaternary ammonium salt formed from methacryloylethyl betaine, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, and methacryloylethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride.[1] The number 48 after Polyquaternium is only an identifier distinguishing different Polyquaterniums; it does not indicate the amount or molecular size. Its positively charged portions are used to reduce static electricity in hair and leave a thin film. In cosmetics, it is used to reduce static that makes hair strands lift or cling together, form a thin film on the skin, hair, and nail surface after application, and hold the desired hairstyle in place.[2]
