About Polyquaternium-46
Polyquaternium-46 is a polymerized quaternary ammonium salt obtained by reacting vinylcaprolactam, vinylpyrrolidone, and methylvinylimidazolium methosulfate.[1] The number 46 after Polyquaternium is only an identification number distinguishing different Polyquaterniums; it does not indicate the amount used or molecular size. Its positively charged portions are used to reduce static electricity in hair and leave a thin film. In cosmetics, it is used to reduce static that makes hair strands lift or cling together, form a thin film on the surface of skin, hair, or nails after application, and help keep the desired hairstyle in place.[2]
