About Polyquaternium-4

Polyquaternium-4 is a copolymer of hydroxyethylcellulose and diallyldimethylammonium chloride.[1] The number 4 after Polyquaternium is only an identifying number used to distinguish different Polyquaterniums; it does not indicate the concentration or molecular size. Its positively charged portions are used to reduce static electricity in hair and leave a thin film. In cosmetics, it is used to reduce static that makes hair strands stand up or stick together and to form a thin film on the surface of the skin, hair, and nails after application.[2]
