Polyquaternium-17 is a polymerized quaternary ammonium salt obtained by reacting adipic acid and dimethylaminopropylamine with dichloroethyl ether.[1] The number 17 following Polyquaternium is only an identification number distinguishing different Polyquaterniums; it does not indicate the content or molecular size. Its positively charged portions are used to reduce static electricity in hair and leave a thin film. In cosmetics, it is used to reduce static that causes hair strands to lift or stick together and to form a thin film on the surface of skin, hair, or nails after application.[2]
