About Polyquaternium-116

Polyquaternium-116 is a quaternary ammonium salt obtained by polymerizing behenic acid, adipic acid, triethanolamine, and methyldiethanolamine, followed by reaction with dimethyl sulfate.[1] The number 116 after Polyquaternium is only an identification number distinguishing different Polyquaterniums; it does not indicate content or molecular size. Its positively charged portions are used to reduce static electricity in hair and leave a thin film. In cosmetics, it is used to reduce friction on the skin or hair and add a smooth feel, reduce tangling and roughness in hair for easier, softer conditioning, and leave the skin surface feeling soft and smooth.[3] In Europe, the maximum concentration is 2.5% in leave-on products, while no separate maximum concentration is specified for rinse-off products. Nitrosamines must also be no more than 50 μg/kg.[2]
