Poloxamer 284 is a polyoxyethylene, polyoxypropylene block copolymer.[1] In the Poloxamer number 284, the first two digits indicate an approximate molecular weight of 2800 for the oil-attracting middle section, while the last digit indicates that the water-attracting portion accounts for about 40%; the water- and oil-attracting portions are relatively balanced. In cosmetics, it is used to create emulsified formulas in which water and oil are evenly mixed and to lower surface tension so ingredients can wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
