About Poloxamer 238
Poloxamer 238 is a polyoxyethylene, polyoxypropylene block copolymer, where x, y, and z are 97, 39, and 97 on average, respectively.[1] In the name Poloxamer 238, the first two digits indicate an approximate molecular weight of 2300 for the oil-compatible middle portion, while the last digit indicates that the water-compatible portion accounts for about 80%; because the water-compatible portion is relatively large, it disperses comparatively well in aqueous formulations. In cosmetics, it is used to create emulsions in which water and oil are evenly mixed and to lower surface tension so that ingredients wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
