Poloxamer 217 is a polyoxyethylene, polyoxypropylene block polymer.[1] In Poloxamer 217, the first two digits indicate an approximate molecular weight of 2100 for the oil-loving central portion, while the last digit indicates that the water-loving portion accounts for about 70%; because of its larger water-loving portion, it disperses relatively well in water-based formulas. In cosmetics, it is used to create emulsified formulas in which water and oil are evenly mixed and to lower surface tension so ingredients wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
