About Poloxamer 188

Poloxamer 188 is a block polymer of polyoxyethylene and polyoxypropylene.[1] In Poloxamer number 188, the first two digits indicate the approximate molecular weight of 1800 for the oil-loving central portion, while the last digit indicates a proportion of about 80% for the water-loving portion. Because the water-loving portion is predominant, it disperses relatively well in aqueous formulations. In cosmetics, it is used to create emulsions in which water and oil are evenly blended and to lower surface tension so ingredients wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
