About PEG-500

PEG-500 is a polymer of ethylene oxide.[1] The number 500 in the name indicates the average number of added ethylene oxide units. With the same base structure, changing this number may also change water miscibility and the viscosity and spreadability of the formula. In cosmetics, it is used to help ingredients in a formula bind together and maintain its form, to help prevent water-and-oil emulsions from separating easily, and to dissolve other raw materials to create a uniform formula.[2]
