PEG-5 Pentaerythrityl Dimethylol Propionate-2 Dendrimer is a highly branched polymer obtained through the sequential reaction of 5 moles of ethoxylated pentaerythritol and 2 moles of dimethylol propionic acid.[1] The number 5 in the name indicates the average number of ethylene oxide units added. With the same base structure, changing this number can alter water miscibility and the viscosity and spreadability of the formulation. In cosmetics, it is used to absorb liquids in the formulation, such as water or oil, to help formula ingredients bind to one another and maintain their form, and to prevent emulsions of water and oil from separating easily.[2] It is also used to form a thin film on the surface of the skin, hair, or nails after application and to hold the hair in the desired shape.[2]
