About PEG-40 Stearate

PEG-40 Stearate is a polyethylene glycol ester of stearic acid.[1] The number 40 in the name indicates the average number of added ethylene oxide units; with the same base structure, changing this number may also change the degree of mixing with water and the formulation's viscosity and spreadability. In cosmetics, it is used to create emulsified formulations in which water and oil are evenly mixed and to lower surface tension so that ingredients wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
