About PEG-40 Sorbitan Stearate

PEG-40 Sorbitan Stearate is the epoxidized sorbitan ester of stearic acid with an average of 40 moles of ethylene oxide.[1] The number 40 in the name indicates the average number of added ethylene oxide units. With the same base structure, changing this number may affect water miscibility and the formula’s viscosity and spreadability. In cosmetics, it is used to create emulsions in which water and oil are evenly mixed and to lower surface tension so ingredients wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
