PEG-40 Hydrogenated Lanolin is a polyethylene glycol derivative of hydrogenated lanolin with an average of 40 moles of ethylene oxide.[1] The number 40 in the name indicates the average number of ethylene oxide units added; for the same base structure, changing this number may also change its miscibility with water and the formula's viscosity and spreadability. In cosmetics, it is used to create emulsified formulas in which water and oil are evenly mixed and to reduce tangling and rough feel in hair, leaving it smooth and manageable.[2]
