PEG-4 is a polymer of ethylene oxide.[1] The number 4 in the name indicates the average number of added ethylene oxide units; with the same base structure, changing this number may also change water miscibility and the formulation’s viscosity and spreadability. In cosmetics, it is used to attract water to formulations and the skin surface to help maintain moisturization, and to dissolve other raw materials to create a uniform formulation.[2]
