PEG-20 is a polymer of ethylene oxide.[1] The number 20 in the name indicates the average number of ethylene oxide units added, and within the same basic structure, changes in this number may also affect water miscibility and the formulation’s viscosity and spreadability. In cosmetics, it is used to attract moisture to the formulation and skin surface to help maintain hydration, and to dissolve other raw materials to create a uniform formulation.[2]
