About Diethyl Oxalate

Diethyl Oxalate is the diester of oxalic acid and ethyl alcohol.[1] In cosmetics, it is used to bind metal ions and reduce their effects on color, fragrance, and formula stability; reduce tangling and rough feel in hair for smoother conditioning; and keep the inherent odor or taste of raw materials from becoming overly prominent.[3] It is also used to add flexibility so films or polymer layers do not become excessively rigid, and to dissolve other raw materials to create a uniform formulation.[3] In Europe, it may be used at up to 5% in finished hair-care products.[2]
