About Cocotrimonium Chloride

Cocotrimonium Chloride is a quaternary ammonium salt, and R in its structure is an alkyl group obtained from coconut oil.[1] In cosmetics, it is used to inhibit microbial growth, reduce static electricity that causes hair strands to lift or stick together, and delay deterioration during storage by inhibiting microbial growth in the product.[3] It is also used to lower surface tension so ingredients can wet, mix, and spread evenly.[3] In Europe, when used as a preservative, it is permitted up to a maximum of 0.1%.[2]
