Cocobetainamido Amphopropionate is an amphoteric zwitterion in which R is an alkyl group derived from coconut oil.[1] In cosmetics, it is used to help sebum and impurities rinse away with water, increase the amount of foam and help it persist, and reduce tangling and roughness in hair to leave it feeling smoother.[2] It is also used to help ingredients that do not dissolve readily in water disperse more evenly in the aqueous phase and to reduce surface tension so that raw materials wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
