Chlorobutanol is a halogenated alcohol.[1] In cosmetics, it is used to inhibit the growth of microorganisms in a product and delay deterioration during storage.[3] In Europe, when used as a preservative, it is permitted at concentrations of up to 0.5%.[2] However, it cannot be used in aerosol spray products.[2]
