Ceteareth-55 is a polyethylene glycol ether of cetearyl alcohol, where R is a mixture of alkyl groups derived from cetyl and stearyl alcohols.[1] The number 55 at the end of the name indicates the average number of ethylene oxide units added. It changes the balance between water-loving and oil-loving portions, resulting in differences in cleansing power, emulsifying ability, and skin feel. In cosmetics, it is used to help sebum and impurities wash away with water and to reduce surface tension so ingredients can wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
