Ceteareth-23 is a polyethylene glycol ether of cetearyl alcohol.[1] The number 23 at the end of the name indicates the average number of ethylene oxide units added; it changes the balance between water affinity and affinity for oily components, resulting in differences in cleansing ability, emulsifying ability, and skin feel. In cosmetics, it is used to help sebum and impurities wash away with water, create emulsified formulas in which water and oil are evenly mixed, and lower surface tension so ingredients can wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
