Ceteareth-18 is the polyethylene glycol ether of cetearyl alcohol; R is a mixture of alkyl groups derived from cetyl and stearyl alcohols.[1] The number 18 at the end of the name indicates the average number of ethylene oxide units added, changing the balance between water-loving and fat-loving portions and resulting in differences in cleansing power, emulsifying ability, and feel. In cosmetics, it is used to create emulsified formulations in which water and oil are evenly mixed, and to lower surface tension so that raw materials wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
