C12-20 Acid PEG-8 Ester is a polyethylene glycol ester of a synthetic mixture of saturated acids with alkyl chains containing 12–20 carbon atoms and an average of 8 moles of ethylene oxide.[1] The number 8 in the name indicates the average number of added ethylene oxide units; within the same base structure, changing this number may also change water miscibility and the formula’s viscosity and spreadability. In cosmetics, it is used to create emulsions in which water and oil are evenly mixed and to lower surface tension so ingredients wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
