C12-15 Pareth-3 is the polyethylene glycol ether of a synthetic C12-15 fatty alcohol mixture with an average of 3 moles of ethylene oxide.[1] The number 3 at the end of the name indicates the average number of ethylene oxide units added; it changes the balance between the water-loving and oil-loving portions, resulting in differences in cleansing power, emulsifying ability, and skin feel. In cosmetics, it is used to create emulsified formulas in which water and oil are evenly mixed and to lower surface tension so raw materials wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
