C12-14 Pareth-9 is a polyethylene glycol ether of a synthetic C12-14 fatty alcohol mixture with an average of 9 moles of ethylene oxide.[1] The number 9 at the end of the name indicates the average number of added ethylene oxide units; it changes the balance between water-loving and oil-loving portions, resulting in differences in cleansing power, emulsifying ability, and feel. In cosmetics, it is used to help sebum and impurities rinse away with water and to lower surface tension so ingredients can wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
