C12-14 Pareth-3 is the polyethylene glycol ether of a synthetic mixture of C12-14 alcohols with an average of 3 moles of ethylene oxide.[1] The number 3 at the end of the name indicates the average number of ethylene oxide units added; it changes the balance between water-loving and oil-loving portions, creating differences in cleansing power, emulsification, and sensory feel. In cosmetics, it is used to create emulsions in which water and oil are evenly mixed, and to lower surface tension so ingredients wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
