C11-15 Pareth-40 is the polyethylene glycol ether of a mixture of C11-15 synthetic fatty alcohols with an average of 40 moles of ethylene oxide.[1] The number 40 at the end of the name refers to the average number of ethylene oxide units added; it changes the balance between water-loving and oil-loving portions, resulting in differences in cleansing ability, emulsifying ability, and skin feel. In cosmetics, it is used to help sebum and impurities wash away with water and to lower surface tension so ingredients can wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
