About Benzoic Acid

Benzoic acid is an aromatic acid.[1] In cosmetics, it is used to increase the volume of a formulation and control the amount of solids, to prevent the characteristic odor or taste of raw materials from becoming overly prominent, and to inhibit the growth of microorganisms in a product, delaying deterioration during storage.[3] In Europe, when used as a preservative, it may be used at up to 2.5% (based on acid content) in rinse-off products other than oral products.[2]
