About Benzalkonium Bromide
Benzalkonium Bromide is a mixture of alkylbenzyldimethylammonium bromides, in which R is a mixture of alkyl homologues consisting mainly of capryl, lauryl, myristyl, and cetyl groups.[1] In cosmetics, it is used to inhibit the growth of microorganisms, reduce static electricity that causes hair strands to lift or stick together, and reduce noticeable unpleasant odors.[2] It is also used to inhibit the growth of microorganisms in the product to slow deterioration during storage, and to lower surface tension so ingredients can wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
