About Sodium Laureth-5 Sulfate
Sodium Laureth-5 Sulfate is the sodium salt of the sulfate ester of lauryl alcohol and a polyethylene glycol ether.[1] The number 5 at the end of the name refers to the average number of ethylene oxide units added. It changes the balance between the water-loving and oil-loving portions, resulting in differences in cleansing power, emulsifying ability, and feel during use. In cosmetics, it is used to help sebum and impurities wash away with water, to form foam during use, and to lower surface tension so ingredients can wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
