About PEG-40 Sorbitan Oleate

PEG-40 Sorbitan Oleate is an ethoxylated sorbitan monoester of oleic acid with an average of 40 moles of ethylene oxide.[1] The number 40 in the name indicates the average number of ethylene oxide units added. With the same base structure, changing this number can affect water miscibility as well as the viscosity and spreadability of the formulation. In cosmetics, it is used to help sebum and impurities wash away with water and to create emulsified formulations in which water and oil are evenly mixed.[2]
