About Laureth-40

Laureth-40 is the polyethylene glycol ether of lauryl alcohol, with an average n value of 40.[1] The number 40 at the end of the name indicates the average number of ethylene oxide units added. It changes the balance between water-loving and oil-loving portions, leading to differences in cleansing power, emulsifying ability, and sensory feel. In cosmetics, it is used to help sebum and impurities rinse away with water, keep the characteristic odor or taste of raw materials from being overly noticeable, and lower surface tension so ingredients wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
