About Laureth-4
Laureth-4 is a polyethylene glycol ether of lauryl alcohol.[1] The number 4 at the end of the name refers to the average number of ethylene oxide units added. It changes the balance between water-loving and oil-loving portions, resulting in differences in cleansing and emulsifying performance and sensory feel. In cosmetics, it is used to reduce static electricity that causes hair strands to lift or stick together, create emulsified formulations in which water and oil are evenly mixed, and prevent the characteristic odor or taste of raw materials from becoming too prominent.[2] It is also used to lower surface tension so ingredients can wet, mix, and spread evenly.[2]
