About Dimethyl Cocamine

Dimethyl Cocamine is a tertiary aliphatic amine whose R group is primarily derived from coconut oil.[1] In cosmetics, it is used to reduce static electricity that causes hair strands to lift or cling to one another, create emulsified formulas in which water and oil are evenly mixed, and help prevent the emulsion from separating easily.[3] It is also used to reduce tangling and roughness in hair for smoother grooming, and to lower surface tension so ingredients can wet, mix, and spread evenly.[3] In Europe, it is limited to 2.5% in leave-on products, while no separate maximum concentration is set for rinse-off products. Nitrosamines must also be no more than 50 μg/kg.[2]
