About Bis-(Methyl Epoxidized Soyate) PEG-20

Bis-(Methyl Epoxidized Soyate) PEG-20 is an ester in which parts derived from an acid and an alcohol are joined.[1] The number 20 in the name indicates the average number of added ethylene oxide units; within the same base structure, changing this number may also change water compatibility and the formula’s viscosity and spreadability. In cosmetics, it is used to lower surface tension so ingredients wet, mix, and spread evenly; to create emulsified formulas in which water and oil are evenly blended; and to increase the amount of foam and help it remain stable.[1] It is also used to help poorly water-soluble ingredients disperse more evenly in the water phase, to enable sebum and impurities to be rinsed away with water, and to keep solid particles or droplets evenly dispersed rather than clumped together.[1]
